Technology cannot replace talent

March 30, 2007 at 8:32 pm (Uncategorized)

Were you aware? A new camera does not make you a better photographer. I am rapidly discovering this with the acquisition of a new camera phone. I was planning all sorts of flickr craziness and blog illustration, but no. Photography, like music composition, is a mysterious arcane art that completely eludes me. This is why I think photographers, composers, and graphic designers (to an extent) are just that bit cooler than normal people. They get something that profoundly baffles me. I think they may be mutants.

Meanwhile, this is a handly tool that I’ve been using for a couple of days now to decrease productivity to the absolute bearable minimum.

My IM with God

You too can hook up with the Man upstairs at iGod (“Repenting made easy!”)!  Having grown up with Sierra adventure games, I have a soft spot for AI-baiting.  Hence the following transcript. Read the rest of this entry »

Lies: Men

January 7, 2007 at 2:24 am (Uncategorized)

Earth Girls Are.

I hope to make this an ongoing series! I wish to examine the ways in which stupid traditional roles make inter-gender relations more complicated than they should be. This is how men are presented to women (or girls), despite obvious everyday experience to the contrary. The lying has gone on for long enough. Let it end here.

Lie #1: Men are taller than women

Can this really be a statistical fact? So many of the men I know are the same height as me, and I’m not freakishly tall for a woman. I have more than once gone out to a club wearing heels, and been offered a delightfully unimpeded view to the bar / DJ booth over the heads of a crowd of men. I don’t mind, short men are wonderful, it’s just that I have been taught to expect men to tower over me. And apparently men like to think they’re taller than women too (shamefully the only example I can think of right now is TomKat and the absurd not-standing-on-a-stack-of-phone-book-honestly wedding photo (no I won’t link to it!)) Were pumps originally developed by a very frustrated female cobbler to make men feel like tiny, girlish eunuchs? Have men shrunk? Or has the right to vote made women taller? Or is it all an ELABORATE HOAX?

Lie #2: Men are really only after one thing, and that one thing is sex Read the rest of this entry »

People I Would Like to Steal From

October 31, 2006 at 8:38 pm (Uncategorized)

I would love to have more visual content on here, but I am a sucky photographer and much too inept with Illustrator and the like to make funky graphics with ease and skill. So it would be so easy to find  fabulously talented artists and STEAL everything I could ever want. But I’m much too soft for that. Bigger companies I’m just scared of (they can track me down at night when I’m not wearing my tin foil hat), and individual little artistlets are just too fluffy to offend. So while I wait for everybody I like to get on Creative Commons or some other smooch-friendly deal, here’s a few links to funkiness. I’ll just pretend they’re actually on the blog and everything will be JUST FINE. Read the rest of this entry »

Eläkeläinen muistelee: Yliopisto

September 26, 2006 at 2:12 pm (Uncategorized)

Varoitus: Tällä ei ole mitään tekemistä Kalervo Palsan kanssa.

Varoitus 2: Kirjoittaja on akateemisesti koulutettu helsinkiläinen elitisti. Kirjoitus saattaa sisältää luokkasokeutta. “Yliopisto” tarkoittaa “Helsingin yliopisto”.

Kirjoitan tätä yliopiston koneella Humanistisen tiedekunnan kirjastossa. En voi olla miettimättä miten minusta sittenkin tuli tällainen ikuisuusopiskelija joka ilman mitään näkyvää syytä kuluttaa (n) vuotta elämänsä parasta aikaa tekemällä maisterintutkintoa. Nyt haluasinkin jakaa nuoremmalle sukupolvelle mietintöjäni. Oppikaa virheistäni, nuoret! Read the rest of this entry »

Laminations

August 20, 2006 at 11:22 pm (Uncategorized)

I’m still rather finding my feet with the editor here. Started a new page to keep things neat and separate – the Results page is for stuff that I’ve made and want to make a record of. At this point it’s mostly knitting. Other things may follow. I like the idea of having separate pages, with the main page functioning more like a directory. Music page may have to be added. It is also starting to seem that I cannot escape Flickr much longer – I’d love to have a place to dump my photos where the people in them could see them but others would not have endless drunken low-lit snapshots of strangers inflicted on them. The least I should do is learn photoshop or equivalent.

Title of the post is from A.S. Byatt’s Babel Tower.

Needless to say

August 19, 2006 at 9:28 pm (Uncategorized)

Everyone has a blog these days. Why? This is what I intend to find out. Is it the titillation of revealing your journal to the world or the ego-stroking rush of seeing your brain-baby in what has at least partially replaced print? Or something else entirely?

My attempts at keeping journals have been sporadic at best, often because I haven’t wanted to imagine an audience for my writing. I’ve always made a point of writing for the sake of writing, which of course often makes for unintelligible ramblings, incomplete sentences, and utterly obscure references. So this is my attempt to explore blogging as a way of keeping a journal. And I still find it impossible to imagine an audience beyond future me.
